Students began this unit by reviewing what they already knew about inequalities. Using what they knew about solving and graphing inequalities, students then looked at how to solve and graph compound inequalities. They discussed how this was similar and different from inequalities they have already seen. Next, students looked at absolute value equations. We discussed absolute value in terms of distance, and students thought about what numbers are a certain distance from 0 on a number line. To review these two topics, students played a multiple choice game on tablets in which they had to solve compound inequalities and absolute value equations. After reviewing these topics, students were ready to move on to absolute value inequalities. We started by thinking about what it would look like if someone lived on the same street as the school less than a mile away, as apposed to someone who lives more than a mile from the school. Thinking of the street like a number line, students saw that these situations looked liked the compound inequalities they had been solving. Using this observation and remembering that absolute value refers to distance on a number line, students saw that absolute value inequalities can be rewritten as compound inequalities.
