School has begun, and we're off to a great start! Over the first few days of class, we discussed rules, expectations, and procedures for math class. We discussed the 'Memorable Mathematicians' bulletin board project (take a look at the page on this website for information about this project). Students were eager to hear about Thales, and are anxious to get their own turn to research a famous mathematician! We started the curriculum by discussing patterns, evaluating expressions, evaluating powers, and solving equations. Here's a problem that students worked on in groups, related to patterns. See if you can figure it out!
These are the first three figures in a pattern. Count the stars in each figure. Look for a pattern in the numbers of stars.
If the pattern continues, which figure will have 45 stars?
