Students have been learning about fractions for the past few weeks. They started by looking at and comparing fractions that have different denominators. Next, students reviewed how to convert between mixed numbers and improper fraction and between fractions and decimals. They were encouraged to explain why the processes they were using make sense based on their understanding of fractions and decimals. After this introduction, students were ready to start performing operations on fractions and mixed numbers. When adding fractions, we discussed how knowledge of fractions is relevant in music. Students looked at a measure of music, and they were able to determine if the notes totaled the necessary 4 beats for the time signature. Students also looked at situations involving baking in which adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers is necessary. After break, students will move on to multiplying and dividing fractions.
